Over the past weeks, we have discovered codependent/toxic relationships exhibit several identifiable characteristics, including a shared pain or past, a spirit of ungratefulness, and hearts headed in two different directions. This week, let’s continue in the life of Abraham as we discover that codependent/toxic relationships also cause issues spiritually. As Abraham dealt with Lot, he suffered emotionally but also spiritually. For a time, he could not hear God’s voice, which was a source of life and strength for him.
In Genesis 12:1–3, God speaks to Abraham in a truly clear, confirming manner: The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” This interaction gave him hope, purpose, and direction. He could build his life on God’s promises—find direction in them. Abraham knew God’s voice intimately, but God did not speak to him again until he parted ways with Lot.
In Genesis 13:14, we read, "The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, ‘Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west." No doubt, Abraham realized having the wrong people in one’s life not only causes emotional damage but also spiritual damage. It is a truth we all need to learn—being in codependent/toxic relationships puts us in a holding pattern, unable to hear God’s voice, receive His guidance, or fulfill God’s plans for our lives.
Take a moment to read Genesis 13:14–18. When Abraham separated from Lot, his life and faith expanded. He had a greater vision for his life. He believed more in God’s love and ability to bring impossibilities to pass. He realized God wanted more for him. He worshiped God more. As we examine our relationships and separate from our own codependent/toxic relationships, may we see our lives expand as Abraham did!
