God Bought You With a High Price

Last week, we sought to change our perspective on finances from the world’s way we had been taught to God’s way which is always for our good and His glory. This week we are going to settle the issue of ownership. When we consider to whom we belong, how do we answer? As believers, the answer is simple, “we belong to God.”

In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, the Word says, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” God’s Word tells us we are not our own but bought with a high price. We gain life eternal by surrendering to Him. We belong to God, but it is a truth we must settle in our hearts and minds.

After acknowledging to whom we belong, we have to settle ownership of our “stuff” – our money, our home, our car, our furniture, our electronics, our clothes – all those “things” we call our own. Psalm 24:1 tells us plainly, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.” Everything belongs to the Lord.

When we say we belong to God, it makes sense that all we possess also belongs to Him, doesn’t it? Everything we have God entrusted into our care to manage on His behalf. We don’t really own anything and knowing that should change how we handle everything in our possession. In fact, this truth is a huge blessing. When we think we own everything, we experience fear, stress, and anxiety, but when we realize God is the owner, we are free from the fear, stress, and anxiety of ownership because the ultimate responsibility belongs to the owner – God.

May we experience the blessing of stewardship (management) without the burden of ownership as we settle the issue once and for all in our minds and hearts and build our own firm financial foundation.
