God's Answer For Anxiety Pt. 3

Aug 18 / Van Moody
Last time, we learned we need to put God first in our lives to claim His promises. We must remember to ask HIM for assistance, knowing He has unlimited resources and wants to provide for all our needs. Let’s go back to Matthew 6:11 one more time, “…Give us TODAY our daily bread.” When we pray, we know this is no problem for God, but we must learn to trust His timing — and therein lies the biggest challenge.

Most of us know God’s timing is not the same as ours, which means the most difficult part in overcoming anxiety is waiting on God’s timing. We tend to always be in a hurry — but God knows exactly when to meet our needs. His timing is perfect! Waiting requires faith. God wants us to trust Him daily (“Give us today…”) moment by moment. He wants the relationship with us; He wants us to look to Him as our Source, to keep depending on Him.

The Greek word translated “daily” is only used once in the Bible — right here in Matthew 6:11. When scholars translated the Bible into English, they couldn’t find the word anywhere in Greek history! They thought someone made it up until 1947, when the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Israel revealed the word on some fragments of shopping lists. These grocery lists included perishable items — items which had to be replenished daily. God wants us to live one day at a time, to live by faith, and not be overly concerned about tomorrow.

How do we get the faith needed to live the day-by-day lifestyle, trusting God for today and not worrying about tomorrow? Romans 10:17 reveals the way: “Faith comes by hearing and hearing from the Word of God.” Could it be that simple? We grow in faith by getting into God’s Word daily. Why? Inside His Word are thousands of years of examples of how God always, always provides. The whole Book testifies to this truth — God always provides. This week, may we remember and apply Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:34, “Don't be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time.”
